Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Green Building Requirements in Maryland

This panel will discuss why you should be a LEED Accredited Professional and the benefits associated with LEED Certification for your building or tenant premises. Case studies of successful LEED certified projects will be presented, including green tenant spaces within non green buildings. We will explore what options these successful businesses considered and learn why they chose the improvements they did. If you are thinking about greening your building or your leased premises to a LEED standard, this panel of experts is not to be missed. This session will also discuss mandatory green building laws for new construction and renovation in Maryland, including Baltimore City, Howard County, Montgomery County and Annapolis. We will also give you the most current information on the yet to be released Baltimore City regulations. This session will also discuss the cost and benefit to green building to reveal surprising actual returns on investment. Energy Trends Now and for the Future

As the costs of raw materials, energy, and water increase, businesses are looking for ways to be more efficient with these resources. This panel, facilitated by Kenneth B. Chodnicki from Winston & Reed Associates, will present an overall picture of energy costs and usage today, as well as where we need to be in the face of diminishing resources and rising costs in the near future. Wayne Hudson from Ecologic, Michael Dorsch from Hallaton and Mike Goodrich from Electrawall will discuss energy audits, retrofits and improvements, and alternative technologies, such as solar, wind, and geothermal and where you should invest your time and funds to get the best payback. This session will include new energy regulations and laws from the Federal, state and local governments and how they affect your business. What is on the horizon for the coming year? Specifically, we will hear about tax laws, credits for retrofits and improvements, and carbon credits.

Is there funding for improvements? Is there free technical assistance to help me make the best investments? On what areas of my business should I focus first? This panel, including Sarah Zaleski from the Baltimore City Sustainability Office, Geoff Stack from Stack Coordination, Barry Williams from the Baltimore County Business Development Office, and Joshua Feldmark from the Howard County Office of Sustainability, will answer these and more of your questions.

This session will address how the principles of LEAN, when applied to "green and clean" are good for business. Successful projects that will be discussed include the areas of: energy, water, materials, packaging, and recycling. This is an interactive discussion that offers real life, common sense solutions from McCormick, Mercy Hospital and several small companies in the Baltimore region. Expert panelists include: Jeff Blankman from McCormick Spice Company, Rachael Demunda from Mercy Hospital, Michael Rothmeier from the TIME Center and Simple Solutions. The facilitator is Mike Galiazzo, Ph.D., President, Regional Manufacturing Institute.

Employee management challenges will also be discussed, including how to engage employees in the greening of the workplace, and the cultural changes necessary to become a successful green business.
